"Mountains" in Name Only

There are a host of colocation, data center, and record storage companies out there advertising themselves as "mountains". Some are actual underground facilities, but upon closer inspection it is revealed the floor level is far below the level of the surrounding area.

Why is it important? There are two major reasons - flooding and air quality. A convetional underground is essentially a hole in the ground. As such, these facilites require huge pumps to protect against potential floods. Secondly, common gases (such as carbon dioxide) are heavier than air. Convetional undergrounds require an extensive vetilation system to keep the air breatheable. Many facilities allow vehicles and other internal cumbustion powered equipment into the completed space and this further degrades the air quality.

There is a another class of companies calling themselves "mountains" - those in which the "mountain" is only in their name and logo. Some are located in the downtown areas of major metropolitan centers, and are housed in revamped warehouses and factories. Others - especially records stroage - are located in sub-standard warehouses, with leaky roofs and little fire protection.

The moral of the story - caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Do your reearch. Check out Google Maps and see just where this "mountain" is.
